Introducing: Edna the Pug

It’s been over seven years since there has been a puppy in my home. Seven years since I’ve had to puppy proofing my home, seven years of not running behind a puppy that’s circling looking for a spot to potty on my carpet. It’s been seven years of going to bed and sleeping (mostly) throughout the night. Other than the occasionally cat using my furniture as a scratch post, it has been seven years without puppy teething marks on the legs of my tables and chairs.

Have I missed those sleepless, crazy puppy days from seven years ago?

Apparently I have!

Yes!

We have a new puppy in the family!

Introducing: Edna the Pug

Edna the Pug

The decision to bring a puppy into our home was not taken lightly, in fact, it’s been an ongoing discussion over the past few years. We’ve discussed the pros and the cons, the what if’s and the how to’s, and of course, discussed the added expenses that comes with bringing another dog into our home.

If you know me, you also know that I already have the dog love of my life, my partner in crime, my sidekick, my heart dog, Edie the Pug. Some of you may even ask why would I want to bring another dog in to my home when Edie and I are doing so well, when we are both in sync and to be honest, she’s such a good dog – why test fate?

I like to think that because Edie is such a good dog, I’m hoping she can play a role in helping develop our new puppy’s attitude, personality and assist in training.

Am I crazy, or just puppy crazy?!

Maybe I’ll be asking myself when I’m woken in the middle of the night by a whimpering puppy who is missing her mom and siblings, or a puppy that decides 2am is a great time to play, maybe when I’m running behind a squatting puppy about to potty my carpet, maybe I’ll be wondering “what have I done, what have I gotten myself into?”

But here’s the thing, maybe, just maybe, because I’ve gone through all these scenarios, and understand it’s not going to be all cute and cuddly puppy love, and I’ve made the decision to wait, actually wait, thinking with my brain and not my heart, ok, my heart had a big part in this, but I waited until I was ready, as ready as I can be, to go through the puppy stage again. Of course, ask me after the first week of no sleep and this could turn into a totally different post LOL!

I hope you’ll all welcome the newest member of our family, Edie the Pug’s little sister:

Edna!

  3. Congratulations to all of you! I’m sure Edie will be a good help in teaching Edna all the things that a Pug needs to know, including mastering the head tilt. Edna sure is adorable, in fact she’s practically as cute as Edie!

  4. Edna is absolutely adorable. I am sure her cuteness will help you forgive her for the little sins of puppyhood. Gusto is almost a year old and he is always coming up with new ways to keep me on my toes. Wags.

  6. Congratulations! Edna looks like a stuffed animal. She is just precious. I think you did the right thing to wait to get a puppy, but I also think letting your heart have a say is key. Otherwise, you might not have brought this cute litle pug into your life! We’re certainly excited for all the pictures!

  7. Welcome to the family Edna. I remember those thoughts when I brought the girls home as kittens six years ago. It was rough going for a while because it had been 16 years since I had had a kitten, but I wouldn’t change that decision

  9. Oh my dog!! Edna is just precious!! I give you so much credit for waiting for when you were truly ready. A puppy is a big commitment. I cried through the first 2 weeks after adopting my last puppy. It got better after that and she was amazing!! I miss her dearly. I hope you, Edie and Edna are happy as can be, even if some of you are sleep deprived. 🙂

    • When Edie first came home she was truly a going concern and I had times when I was so sleep deprived I wondered what I had gotten myself into! I don’t know what it is with Edna, of course she is the typical wild and crazy puppy that never seems to sleep, but I feel so relaxed with her and have been finding it easier and am able to enjoy her puppyhood stage.

  11. A great big puggle welcome to Edna!! I know Edie is going to be a wonderful role model! I think it is nice that Edie has company too! You are right to consider the addition of a new pet well as a great pet parent would but I know you are going to be one happy family!

  15. Welcome Edna! Edie is going to be such a good role model. As for me personally, I think I’ll stick to adult dogs. Can’t handle sleepless nights!

    • Ha! Sleepless nights – I know them well!
The first few nights are the hardest, getting puppy settled, used to being away from her siblings, her mom, and into a routine. For Edna, it’s been more about early mornings – 4:30am was a long day 😉 But each and every night moving forward it gets better and easier.

  16. She is adorable!!!! enjoy the new puppy smell. It’s gone too soon!! Congrats! We are discussing the same issue. Do we get a little sibling for Montecristo now … he turns 8 this summer. Do we wait? But HE is so amazing I feel like he should be there to teach … to impart his “this is what it means to be a heart dog” wisdom. We are still very much just talking … have fun!!!

    • Love the new puppy smell – I have a thing for puppy bellies 😉
I was hoping Edie would play a part in shaping Edna’s personality, but I also didn’t want Edie to feel left out or like she was being replaced. Edie has proved to be such a good role model and very caring to her little sister. Of course there are times Edna gets the puppy crazies and I will give her a time out so Edie can have a break and it’s at this time I make sure to spend special time with Edie one on one.

  19. Congrats! Edna is stinking adorable… and how exciting! I remember that feeling, we hadn’t had a puppy in the house in MANY years (except for some fosters, and even they were long ago) until Penny 3 years ago. Enjoy the puppy breath… and all the FUN firsts!
